SE Controls select Dementia UK as 2020 charity

SE Controls sets sail by supporting Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses in 2020

Dementia UK, whose specially trained Admiral Nurses provide expert and caring support for families affected by the illness, has been chosen by SE Controls as its main focus for fund raising activity for 2020.

Admiral Nurses were named by the family of Joseph Levy CBE BEM, who had vascular dementia and was affectionately known as ‘Admiral Joe’ due to his love of sailing. Since the charity was founded in 1994, more than 260 nurses are providing specialist support and Dementia UK aims to increase this number to 300 in 2020.

As part of SE Controls annual charity selection process, this year’s charity was nominated by Debi Lawler, who joined the company 21 years ago and is an Area Leader covering the manufacture and assembly of controllers and switches in the production department.

She said: “Dementia is an umbrella term for a wide range of degenerative brain conditions and it seems that almost everyone either knows a sufferer, cares for them or has lost someone as a direct result. In addition to experiencing the loss of a family member myself, the selection of Dementia UK is also a fitting tribute to SE Controls founder, Bill Perkins, who had suffered with the illness since 2015 and sadly died last year.”

With Dementia UK’s target of increasing the number of Admiral Nurses alongside growing its presence of Admiral Nurse Services in GP practices and hospitals in 2020, donations are an essential part of its operations, so Debi and fellow SE Controls employees have already started on the programme of fundraising activities.

A  Valentine’s Day raffle, weekly ‘Bonus Ball’ sweepstake and other events have already started adding to the fundraising target of £3000 with initiatives planned throughout the year. Debi explained: “We have one brave person doing a charity sky-dive for us, while another member of staff is being sponsored to run the London Marathon. A charity rugby match is arranged for August with Walsall Rugby Club, while other activities, such as ‘Cake Bakes’, ‘Dress in the decade you were born’ and a diverse range of seasonal activities are also planned.”
