The entire 127 miles of the Leeds Liverpool canal was the route taken by 14 charity cyclers from SE Controls in July. Despite the poor weather the team raised almost £4,000 for their chosen charity Macmillian. Spread over 3 days and cycling along the towpath, minus the tunnels, the team managed the feat whilst camping out along the route.
Mark Hargreaves, SE Controls Commercial Manager (Northern Division), who organised the event commented, “I did take some pictures along the way, but, please bear in mind that the only time I could take pictures was when we stopped, and that just happened to coincide with us being in or close to a pub, which made us look happier than we actually were. Make no mistake, this was a seriously hard trip, as you can probably tell if you were anywhere near one of the riders when they try and get up or sit down.
“We had some great support from a few people, most notably Tom Jaunzems who gave up half of his weekend to help build tents, then collect them from muddy fields, transport them 40 miles and then collect them again the next day, so a big thanks to him. I think everyone will agree, whilst the weather was shocking, the food we had along the way was top notch, with great staff and fantastic views.
“Finally I’d like to thank everyone who gave up their weekend, a day off their holiday entitlement to take part in the event, and of course everyone who sponsored us.”
Contributions can still be made via http://www.justgiving.com/secontrols/ the current total is £4,500, 88% complete on a target of £5,000, with £4,000 generated from the bike ride.. Mark Hargreaves would particularly like to thank the ‘Craven Heifer’ at Kelbrook, the ‘Cafe Cargo’ at Foulridge and the ‘Cherry Tree’ at Arlington who all offered their services at a discount.
