The continued debate on the impact and effects of overheating in homes was the central theme of the Housing Forum’s quarterly innovation Workshop, which was recently hosted by leading smoke and natural ventilation specialist, SE Controls, at its international headquarters near Lichfield, Staffordshire.

To provide delegates with an expert insight into the issue, while sharing information and promoting debate, key presentations and contributions were provided by Zero Carbon Hub (ZCH), Loughborough University, ASRA Housing Group, PRP, Black Country Housing Group and Wales Living Space.

The half-day event, presided over by Housing Forum Chief Executive, Shelagh Grant, got underway with two presentations from SE Controls. The first by Managing Director, Will Perkins, covered multi-occupancy fire regulations, which was followed by Design Manager, Dr Chris Iddon who presented recent company research into corridor and circulation space overheating issues.

Nicola O’Connor detailed recent ZCH research into overheating monitoring and implications for housing practitioners followed by Loughborough University’s Stephen Porritt who demonstrated the potential of the CREW online toolkit to assess the cost and efficacy benefits of housing energy saving retrofit programmes.

Asset management and energy costs were discussed by ASRA’s Paul Morgan while Andrew Mellor of PRP together with Richard Baines of Black Country Housing and Wales Living’s Paul Davies covered housing standards and energy management from different perspectives.

SE Controls’ MD, Will Perkins, said: “We’re delighted to be a member of the Housing Forum and events of this type are essential to ensure that the issues facing housing are explored fully and that the innovative technologies needed to address key concerns such as overheating, are shared and implemented where they can deliver the greatest benefit.”
