St Luke’s Square
SE Controls have recently completed the design, installation and commissioning of a smoke ventilation system at St Lukes Square, Canning Town in London.
St Luke’s Square has been developed in partnership with Mizen Properties Ltd and Galliard Homes on a design and build contract. This contemporary courtyard development completed in February, includes 162 elegant one and two bedroom apartments and circa 43,000 ft2 of commercial space.
SE Controls brief was to provide a smoke ventilation system for core’s A,B,C & D of the building, to provide safe escape routes for the occupants in the event of a fire and to provide clear access for the fire service to enter the affected area.
The residential development was designed generally in accordance with Approved Document B for core’s B,C & D. However, in core A an extended travel distance of 19m existed at first floor level within the common corridor; therefore it was proposed that the extended distance is justified by supplying a mechanical smoke extraction system.
The extensive CFD analysis proved that using a conventional naturally ventilated smoke shaft system as described in Approved Document B, would fail, due to the extended travel distances of 19m. SE Controls therefore modelled the scenarios using their SHEVTEC® Powered Extract Fans to mechanically ventilate the corridor via a reduced sized smoke shaft. CFD modelling was able to successfully prove that the SHEVTEC® Powered Smoke Shaft system was able to perform better than a code compliant solution and so SE Controls were happy to recommend the system to the client and Building Control.
As the travel distances from the furthest apartment to the stair core was within the recommendations of Approved Document B in cores B, C & D, a code compliant natural ventilation system was implemented. The system in core D consisted of an automatic opening fire door on each floor of the smoke shaft to open on the effected fire floor upon smoke detection. The OS2 control system would operate the fire door and simultaneously open in conjunction with the SHEVTEC® roof vents at the top of the shaft to exhaust the smoke from the common corridor. Cores B & C consisted of opening windows and SHEVTEC® rooflights in the common area’s.
During the commissioning stages SE Controls provided a cold smoke test to demonstrate that the system would actually operate as designed. SE Controls was able to prove that the installed system installed functioned in accordance with their design thereby validating the CFD modelling.
