Cabot House
SE Controls have provided a natural ventilation system for Horizon House, the Environment Agency’s new Bristol office and has received the highest ever awarded BREEAM score.
The new sustainable office has gained 85.06% under the BREEAM 2006 environmental assessment which is the highest ever achieved rating in the UK, making this development the greenest commercial building in the UK.
The project comprises a 6,600m2 development to which 85% of the existing building was demolished to make way for the new green development.
The building required a natural ventilation strategy that would provide clean fresh air into the working space to provide a healthy and productive environment for its occupants. The solution designed works by exhausting the warm stale air out of the building and introducing fresh cool air through the use of climate and air quality changes.
SE Controls provided the natural ventilation system to fully automate and control the six equal banks of windows within the main atria space. The 342x actuators were programmed to fully and fully close, but SE Controls provided a 0-10v signal within the control strategy to allow for proportional opening if required.
The six banks of windows were programmed to open on an alternate basis to reduce ware and tear of the mechanics of the automatic opening vents and to operate the windows in alternative operations to help with the window cleaning operation. This enabled the internal window cleaners to access the closed windows and clean.
