DTC Tameside Hospital
Red Architectural approached SE Controls for their expertise in providing a solution for a smoke evacuation system on a number of glazed atriums at the Tameside Children’s Hospital in Manchester. The Atria, designed by Keppie, will use Schuco AWS 57 RO glazed roof vents to provide smoke ventilation in case of fire. Having worked with RED on a number of jobs, their working relationship made the project much easier to deal with.
The project itself was split into 3 Phases; the first of which was the Children’s Atrium. This has 6 bottom and 6 top hung open out roof vents which SE Controls have supplied and fitted 12 pairs of tandem linear actuators, side hung, so they could provide maximum opening at minimum cost. These were completed in March.
The second Phase, the Day Surgery, is exactly the same as the Children’s Atrium and was completed at the end of May.
The Third Phase, the Central Atrium, has 28 top hung open out sloping roof vents set on raised stacks. Two of these Stacks have 6 Vents and four of the Stacks have 4 Vents. Each vent is powered by a SCLA Linear motor. On each stack are also vertical, top hung open out vents – two on two of the four vent stacks and 6 vent stacks and one on the remaining 4 vent stacks- powered by SCCO Chain motors. These vertical vents were added to better the aerodynamic free area of the main atrium and minimising the need for larger, more expensive linear motors on the Roof Vents.
This system design allows the roof vents to open upon activation of the smoke alarms, using modular control, OS2 panels, manufactured and tested by SE Controls, which leaves the area clear for patients and staff to evacuate the building safely in a smoke free environment.
