Willis Building
The Willis Building, head quarters of the global insurance giants Willis Group Holdings, is situated at 51 Lime Street directly opposite Lloyd's in the heart of the financial mile. Designed by world-renowned architects Foster & Partners, The Willis Building won the 2007 New City Architecture Award for its unique architectural form and contribution to the streetscape and skyscape of the City of London.
SE Controls was selected to provide a code compliant natural smoke shaft solution to aid in the means of escape and smoke clearance strategy within the 26 floor building. A natural smoke shaft utilises automatic opening smoke doors or dampers to draw smoke into the smoke shaft and out the affected area through a roof vent at the top of the shaft
The selected smoke ventilation system comprised automatic opening fire rated doors located in the North core of the building that were used to ventilate the lobbies. The doors are automated by SELA P 400N 400mm stroke linear actuators fitted inside the shaft and operated upon activation of the fire alarm processed through SE Controls control panel.
The South Core and FAB building consists of two natural smoke shafts automated each door on each floor by SELA P 400N 300mm stroke Linear actuators which open upon activation of the Fire alarm, in conjunction with the top of shaft ventilators. All shaft doors on the north and south are connected to fireman’s override switches, fitted in view of the shafts, which will enable the fire service to reset the system safely.
