Garrick Theatre
Lichfield’s new £5.5 million Garrick Theatre has given one local company the opportunity to take a bow following its involvement in the award winning development.
The environmentally friendly theatre, which opened its doors to the public last summer, has been recognised with an award for its natural ventilation, the principal system for which was designed and installed by SE Controls.
SE Controls, one of the UK’s leading automatic window opening specialists, installed its own OSO building management interface system. This formed the integral part of the overall project’s internal natural ventilation supported by approximately 50 SECO 24 40 chain actuators located within nine chimney stacks.
“We work on projects on a nationwide basis, so it was particularly pleasing to work on a high profile job like this so close to home and one which will be enjoyed by so many people locally,” said SE Controls’ Commercial Director Martin Oates.
“From design stage to completion we were able to assist in ensuring a practical, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing solution to ventilate the building. The use of natural ventilation in preference to powered fans and air conditioning has so many advantages particularly for a venue like a theatre. It provides easily controllable conditions with a low energy system that is environmentally beneficial reducing CO2 emissions and building running costs. It’s also much quieter so the audience benefits from a better environment and doesn’t even know the system is there,” he added.
Designed by architects Short and Associates, the theatre is named after one of Lichfield's favourite sons 18th Century actor David Garrick, and is equipped to serve as a focal point for the arts in the Midlands. It features a main auditorium for an audience of 500 and a smaller studio for 200 people.
It will serve as a principal cultural and arts venue with professional and amateur theatre, gallery space and a performing studio for music and cutting edge productions. As a business venue, the Lichfield Garrick will also provide conference facilities and corporate entertainment as well as a base for business support.
