Whiston Hospital
SE Controls have recently installed, commissioned and supplied a smoke and natural ventilation system at Whiston Hospital, in Prescot, Merseyside, to regulate the internal comfort of the atria and keep the stair cores free from smoke in the event of a fire.
Whiston Hospital will be redeveloped in two distinct phases. A new block is being constructed in the northwest corner of the site, in an area that has been previously cleared. Buildings that were demolished included the old Work House, Chapel and associated support services accommodation. The first phase is expected to be completed in May 2010 with facility occupancy in August 2010. The existing Accident & Emergency block will be refurbished as a second phase to provide alternative accommodation and is will be completed in September 2011.
SE Controls are providing window automation to the external facade of the atria at low, medium and high level along with the control of each zone by the OS2 control system.
The natural ventilation system includes temperature and CO2 sensors strategically placed within the atria to monitor and control the internal environment and to start the automation of windows when a required set point is reached. External weather sensors monitor the external conditions around the building for, wind speed and direction, temperature and rain fall to ensure that the building is precisely controlled to ensure the thermal comfort and air quality for internal occupants.
Smoke ventilation was provided in the atria to establish a stable smoke reservoir in the height of the atria to aid in the safe escape of occupants in the event of a fire and to reduce the smoke to maintain tenable conditions. Typically high level and low level automatic opening vents are used to aid in the mechanics of the smoke reservoir.
As part of the smoke ventilation system, SE Controls provided the control and actuation of the automatic opening vents above the radiology department and within the 6 stair cores. The stair cores all had Velfec Timber glazed vents installed that were operated independently by OS2 controllers.
